Clear flap opening describes the passage the pet uses. Rough opening describes the prepared hole required for the selected model. Frame tip-to-tip describes the outer footprint visible on the mounting surface. Cover size describes the removable panel used to close compatible frames. These values answer different questions. A pet may fit the flap while the frame overlaps a door rail; an existing hole may match a rough opening while the outer frame runs into trim.
Keep the dimensional name next to every width and height in a worksheet. Do not copy an unlabeled pair of numbers into a contractor email or custom order. For standard products, use the variant and model documentation. For custom products, state the starting basis and preserve every conversion. For an in-glass project, the glass professional must also use the dedicated cutout packet rather than interpreting a door- or wall-model rough opening.
Door models are built to clamp through compatible hinged panels. Wall models add a tunnel through the complete finished wall and are divided into depth families, including thin, standard and deeper assemblies. Screen models transfer movement into a supported screen frame and may use a stabilizer. In-glass models are intended for professionally prepared glass. Kennel and pass-through models address higher-cycle or interior-only access needs. The visible frame may look related, but mounting and sealing details are not universal.
Measure construction thickness at the intended location. A wall dimension includes all finished layers through which the tunnel passes, not one layer of drywall or one exterior wythe. A door assessment includes skins, core, panels and internal reinforcement. A screen assessment includes frame width, mesh condition and crossbars. A glass assessment includes panel construction and fabrication requirements determined by a qualified glass professional.
Model, named size, frame finish, flap package and certain orientation or depth choices combine into the orderable configuration. Replacement covers and locks may also depend on top-, left- or right-loading interior frames. Do not rely on the page title alone when saving an order. Record the final SKU and selected option labels, then compare the line item with the measurement worksheet before submission.
Single and double flaps change push resistance and exterior weather behavior. Frame finish changes appearance but not the required pet or cut dimensions. Wall depth determines tunnel compatibility. Custom size changes the production dimensions and may affect future replacement parts. Treat each selection as a controlled field rather than adding an ambiguous request to order notes after choosing a different variant.
Give the installer the exact model manual, dimensional worksheet and photographs of both faces. Ask the installer to confirm opening position, structure, utilities, hardware, water management, finish repair and required professional trades. The approval should cover the full frame footprint, not only the cutout. In-glass fabrication should not proceed until the glass professional has reviewed the cutout information for the selected configuration.
Use the guide as one part of an order record, not as a substitute for the exact product page and model instructions. Keep the pet measurements, selected flap size, rough opening, exterior frame dimensions, installation surface, finish, flap package and final SKU together. When a contractor or glass professional is involved, add that person’s verified construction dimensions without replacing the measurements that established pet fit. This creates a traceable path from animal to opening to ordered configuration.
Review the information again immediately before submitting an order. Similar terms can describe different dimensions: flap opening is the clear passage, rough opening is the prepared hole, and tip-to-tip is the outside frame. A wall depth, screen-panel width or glass cutout is another construction measurement entirely. Label every number and attach the exact manual to the location. If a fact is uncertain, pause and verify it instead of turning an assumption into a made-to-order selection.
Save the guide, order confirmation, photographs and installation notes after the pet door is in service. Record the model, named size, flap count, frame finish and any wall tunnel, cover orientation or screen stabilizer. That information makes replacement flaps, magnets, weather strip, covers and locks easier to identify later. It also helps separate normal component wear from an opening that was installed out of square or a building seal that needs repair.
Inspect the completed opening as part of normal home or facility maintenance. Keep flap edges and magnets clean, watch for curled vinyl or damaged weather strip, confirm covers move freely and review exterior perimeter seals. The rigid frame and the flexible service parts do different jobs and may have different service lives. Replacing a verified wear component early is usually simpler than waiting until repeated contact or a persistent gap affects the rest of the system.
A useful handoff lets the installer, customer and future service person understand the same configuration without translating shorthand. Name the location, identify the surface, list the pet-door model and SKU, and separate clear flap, rough-opening and outer-frame dimensions. Add wall or door thickness, screen support, glass-fabrication information and cover orientation when they apply. Put approvals next to the fact being approved rather than collecting an unlabeled yes in a message thread. This structure reduces the chance that a correct measurement is attached to the wrong opening or product family.
After installation, add the completed mounting height, photographs from both sides and any approved field adjustment. Keep policy, shipping or warranty communications with the order instead of rewriting their terms in the measurement sheet. The guide can then remain focused on product selection and care while current written policies control eligibility. When ownership or maintenance responsibility changes, pass the record forward with the physical cover, spare parts and manuals. A well-documented pet door is easier to operate, inspect and repair than an opening identified only by its visible color and approximate size.
Finish by choosing the next practical action. If fit is still uncertain, return to the exact flap and frame dimensions. If the product is selected, move to the installation guidance for the actual surface. If the opening is already in service, identify the model and size before choosing replacement parts. Custom work deserves an extra measurement review because one unlabeled number can undo otherwise careful planning. Save the final configuration with the measurements, photographs and installation notes so the next decision starts from verified information.
It is the prepared hole required by the selected model. It is larger than the clear flap passage and smaller than the full outside frame.
Measure the complete finished assembly at the intended opening, including interior and exterior layers. Confirm unusual construction with the installer.
No. In-glass work uses its dedicated product and fabrication information and should be reviewed by a qualified glass professional.
Start with the pet, then the opening surface, then the exact measurements. If the guide raises a site-specific issue, confirm it before choosing a final product variant.
Yes. The sizing quiz is a good first pass because it connects pet type, breed or height, opening surface and weather exposure before pointing you toward a match.
Use an installer or trade professional when the opening involves glass, walls, masonry, utilities, structural framing or anything you cannot verify from both sides.
